I have been making art since I was a child, having learned from my mother, Ilene Pearlman, who is also an artist. These days, I primarily work in oil paint, though I occasionally use other methods as well. My preference is to paint from life, outside in the field. I stretch my own canvases, and have designed a stacking Matryoshka canvas set, inspired by Russian nesting dolls which fit inside one another. This allows me to bring many canvases with me at a time and have greater control over a spontaneous painting. The portability of my canvases allows me to bring them with anywhere I go. Whether it’s an international trip, or just a day out, I can fit all of my art supplies in a single backpack. Once a painting is dry, I remove it from the stretcher bar and attach a new piece of fabric in order to maximize portability. Whenever possible, I use recycled materials–reducing my environmental impact and giving my work a unique personality. Discarded fabric makes for a good painting surface, and wood for stretcher frames can often be found in the trash. Originally from the Philadelphia area, my art has since taken on an international perspective. I have lived and travelled all over the world, gaining inspiration and materials everywhere I go.
